Michael Diaz, a past president of the Staten Island Board of Realtors (SIBOR), and his wife, Georgianna, celebrated her induction as SIBOR president in January.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y., Georgianna Diaz, president of the Staten Island Board of Realtors (SIBOR), and her husband, Michael, a past president of SIBOR, were featured in a Staten Island Advance/SILive  article on May 22.

Penned by Advance writer Andrea Boyarsky, the article,  “Husband and wife cancer survivors prove early detection saves lives,” is the third in a series of Portraits of Hope being run in the Advance Health section throughout May. The first-person accounts lead up to the American Cancer Society’s first Relay For Life June 2 at Wagner College.

This is how the story begins:

My name is Georgianna Diaz and I am a 10-year breast cancer survivor.

My mother had breast cancer and I was very diligent about getting my yearly mammogram. When I went for my appointment in March 2002, I was confident everything would be normal like it had been for the past 11 years. After all, my health was good and I had no visible signs of lumps or soreness.

After the examination and mammogram, the radiologist called me into her office and told me there was evidence of calcification. She said it was cause for concern and recommended I make an appointment with a breast cancer surgeon for further evaluation.  READ MORE  …
