STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — They are cold. They are hungry. Many have no place to stay. And they need the government’s help in the deadly wake of Hurricane Sandy.

As of Friday morning, nearly 14,200 Staten Island families had registered for aid with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA has already dispensed more than $29 million in aid to borough residents, said Patrick Hernandez, the agency’s division supervisor for Staten Island.

Millions of dollars more is expected to be distributed in the coming weeks and months as additional claims are filed and processed.
