While a lot of New York City’s representation in film is centered around Manhattan, Staten Island has its share of famous film locations. To shed some light on Staten Island’s film history, here are nine locations filmed on the island, from small, independent films to popular classics.

1. The Corleone Family Home

The Corleone Family house in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 mob epic The Godfather can be found at 110 Longfellow Avenue.  

 

2. Staten Island Ferry

This 24-hour transit option that helps millions of New Yorkers get to work and back has been used in numerous films, like The Secret of My SuccessWorking GirlHow to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and for television shows like Girls.

3. St. George Ferry Terminal

St. George’s Ferry, the Staten Island terminus of the Staten Island Ferry, was used by Martin Scorsese in his 1967 drama Who’s That Knocking at My Door?

 

4. 36 Hamilton Avenue

This apartment building was the home of the main character in Brian De Palma’s late 70s horror film Sisters, played by Margot Kidder. The building looks the same as it did thirty years ago.

 

5.  Staten Island Zoo

The 78-year-old zoo, which is home to over 200 different animal species, was used in the film version of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey.

 

6. Great Kills Marina

Al Pacino and Johnny Depp walked this marina together during filming of the 90s mob film Donnie Brasco, based on the true story of undercover agent Joseph D. Pistone’s investigation of the Bonnano crime family. 

 

7. 387 St. Paul’s Avenue

8. Pergament Mall

The mall located on 2795 Richmond Avenue is used in another mob epic, Martin Scorsese’s classic 1990 film Goodfellas. The mall can be seen during the helicopter chase scene in the later half of the film.  

9. The Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne

In The Godfather, The Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne was used for the exterior shots after one of the most iconic scenes in the film, the revenge-filled “baptism” scene.

Note: An earlier version of this post included the former Mitchel Air Force Base, where the assassination of Sonny Corleone was filmed in The Godfather. Mitchel Air Force Base was in Nassau County.
