Donations sought for local dad with devastating spinal injury

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (AUG. 18, 2021) – Staten Island’s Realtor community is seeking help on behalf of a father of two young children who was paralyzed from the neck down by a tragic accident in March.

The devastating spinal injury left Realtor Joseph Tsomik “unable to provide for his wife and children, and do the basic things that we all enjoy every day – such as sitting down to have a meal, playing with our kids, taking a walk on the beach – and namely, looking after our family,” said Gary Papirov of his friend and business partner.

Tsomik’s unforeseen circumstance has created a profound financial impact on him and his family, with a need for numerous surgeries or treatments at Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai hospitals, and the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. Some costly essentials include a modification of his home to fit rehabilitation equipment, a van to transport him to and from doctors, and 24-hour nursing care.

“I’ve known Joe for many years. He’s truly one of the good guys, someone who has never hesitated to volunteer and assist others in their times of need,” said Ron Molcho, chair of the Staten Island Board of Realtors® (SIBOR) 2021 Golf Challenge Cup set for Oct. 13, which will be a fundraiser for Tsomik. “Now, it’s our turn to embrace humanity – an opportunity for all of us to lend a hand – and I’m hoping you will help us to help Joe walk again.”

“As Joe’s monthly medical expenses are astronomical, time is of the essence, so SIBOR is providing donation opportunities that extend beyond direct participation with the golf outing,” said Sandy Krueger, CEO of the Staten Island Board of Realtors®. “We are encouraging caring individuals and organizations to provide a contribution in hopes of helping Joseph Tsomik on his journey to recovery.”

Donations may be given in one or more of the following ways:
