Mapping Staten Island is presented in conjunction with the exhibition From Farm to City: Staten Island, 1661-2012, on view at the Museum of the City of New York from September 13, 2012 through January 21, 2013.
The exhibition and the Website were made possible through the generous support of the Richmond County Savings Foundation.
Through maps, photographs, newspapers, government documents, and original artifacts, the exhibition presents Staten Island’s historical transformation and its changing roles as a farming center, as a rural retreat, as the site of rapidly residential communities, as a center for industry, and as an increasingly dense urban environment.
From Farm to City: Staten Island 1661-2012 also enables visitors to explore current debates about land preservation, environmental sustainability, and redevelopment on the island, including through a special case study of the Fresh Kills landfill redevelopment.
The exhibition is a co-presentation of the Museum of the City of New York, Staten Island Historical Society at Historic Richmond Town, and the Staten Island Museum.
