From April to November every year, you can take a tour of Freshkills Park on Staten Island, which will be the largest park built by New York City in over 100 years. Here are some fun facts that might surprise you about Freshkills:

1. The “kill” in Freshkills comes from the Middle Dutch word for “stream” or “channel”

2. It was once the site of the largest landfill in the world, at 2200 acres.
