Events, educational programs, grants, and volunteering opportunities— Staten Island Arts has your artistic needs covered. The organization works to make art accessible in the Staten Island community and supply local artists with the support needed to thrive. The grants are competitive and honor arts-in-education programs and cultural organizations while celebrating artistic development.
Previously known as the Council On the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island (COAHSI), the new Staten Island Arts is currently relocating their main headquarters. An office and art space called the Culture Lounge is scheduled to open at the St. George Ferry Terminal this year, with the hope of attracting some of the 75,000 daily Staten Island Ferry passengers. You can get involved as a member of the organization, which entitles you to free workshops and events, or you can help out as a volunteer.
Staten Island Arts is a breeding ground for conferences, workshops, contests, and applications. On Facebook, the organization is constantly churning out new opportunity listings for artists, musicians, filmmakers, performers, writers, and more — it’s a great way to stay plugged into the creative community and engage in artistic collaboration. They also highlight new and forthcoming artists, and have a special branch dedicated to young adults and teens in the arts.
Space is sometimes limited at events, so be sure to check the calendar frequently. This summer, Staten Island Arts will host a one-day festival of film and performance art called Lumen at Atlantic Salt Company’s waterfront dock — definitely not something you want to miss.
