Sure, this might be the longest winter on record, but that can’t stop us from dreaming of the days when we’ll be able to frolic outside without fear of frost-bite. And once the weather warms, we know where we’ll be heading — straight to Staten Island! Staten Island is home to thousands of acres of parkland, all with different features and athletic advantages. Some sports-focused parks include Wolfe’s Pond Park, unique because of its roller hockey rink, and Miller Field, which boasts a cricket field and bocce court. Clove Lakes Park in Sunnyside is an ideal place for baseball, soccer, basketball, and football. Clove Lakes also has Staten Island’s most popular outdoor skating rink, WWII Veterans War Memorial Ice Skating Rink.

For something more unorthodox, take a trip to Cousins Paintball, 20 acres of secluded woodland open on the weekends and welcoming to anyone age 10 and up. If paintball doesn’t catch your fancy, perhaps tumbling will. Athletic Edge Sports Center is a 10,000+ square foot gym that provides gymnastics classes for kids and adults of all levels of experience. They also offer training in Samadhi mixed martial arts!
Until spring permits us to ride go-karts or play mini golf at Staten Island Go-Karts, the Greenbelt Recreation Center offers indoor swimming pools, fitness rooms, and table tennis. Warm weather will also invite the opening of a new 2,500-seat indoor track and field house in Ocean Breeze Park. Now all we need is for the temperature to rise above freezing!
