Mandolin Bros. banjo room
For over 36 years, Mandolin Brothers, Ltd., has been the go-to spot for musicians of all shapes and sizes (including Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Paul Simon, and Paul McCartney) have come to view the massive and unique selection of vintage stringed instruments. Located in Staten Island’s West Brighton neighborhood, the famous shop includes a highly curated selection of banjos, ukuleles, guitars, and mandolins.
The store was founded by Stan Jay and Harold “Hap” Kuffner, who named the store Mandolin Brothers as a joke, slyly poking fun at other music store owners that name their shops after themselves. Stan still runs the store today, guiding the ship from his front-of-shop office, serving clientele from all over the world.
What makes Mandolin Brothers so unique is its showroom, neatly divided by instrumental type. The shop is careful to showcase only the highest quality instruments from major manufacturers and small businesses. While it may give off a “Do Not Touch” vibe, the staff is always willing to allow customers hands-on practice on any instrument, and the sound quality is some of the best you will ever find.
In 1992, the music shop was included in the NYC Grammy Awards Host Committee’s “New York City Music Trail,” along with other famous landmarks like Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, and Lincoln Center.
So if you need a new banjo, want to learn to play, or simply view the amazing instrument rooms, head over to Mandolin Brothers, located at 629 Forest Avenue.
