You may be surprised to find that Staten Island has the highest median household income in all five boroughs, edging out Manhattan by about $2,000. Or that, despite New York City being a Democratic stronghold, Richmond County has the highest concentration of people reportedly voting Republican of any of the five boroughs.
Staten Island is remarkably racially diverse, much like the rest of New York City. The 2010 census data, revealed some interesting information about Staten Island’s populace including the fact that Staten Island proudly houses more Italian Americans (36% of the population) than any other county in the country. (And more members of the Wu-Tang Clan.)
As in other parts of the city, different Staten Island neighborhoods have different demographics. You’ll see mostly Italian Americans in neighborhoods along the South Shore, while people of Asian descent tend to live along the SI Expressway. Hispanics are the fastest growing group on the island, growing by 51% in the ten years between the 2000 and 2010 census. They are mostly concentrated in the areas north of the Expressway. There are no neighborhoods where African Americans make up a majority, though Park Hill has a high concentration of African Americans and the largest population of Liberian immigrants outside Africa.
So who exactly lives on Staten Island? A lot of fascinating people. Come and see for yourself!
