Tax compliancy a highlight of Staten Island Small Business Development Center workshop
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – For business owners, it’s critical to correctly determine whether individuals providing services are employees or independent contractors. If an employee is wrongly classified as an independent contractor, the IRS may hold the business owner liable for the worker’s employment taxes.
An upcoming Staten Island Small Business Development Center seminar will clarify the tax boundaries between workers who qualify as employees eligible for a W-2 tax form, and independent contractors, who should be given a 1099.
The event, “1099 vs. W-2: What Should Your Business Do?,” will take place June 5, 9 to 11 a.m., in Building 1P, Center for the Arts Recital Hall, at the College of Staten Island. The campus is located at 2800 Victory Blvd., in the Staten Island community of Willowbrook.
The featured speaker will be Craig L. Venokur, CPA, of Adelman, Katz & Mond LLP, a Manhattan-based firm providing tax, accounting, business management and financial services. Venokur will explain the variety of issues businesses must consider when determining a worker’s classification.
“According to the IRS, no one factor stands alone in making this determination,” said Dean L. Balsamini, director of the Staten Island SBDC. “This seminar will guide business owners toward making a correct tax-compliant decision, saving them from additional costs and penalties resulting from a wrong decision.”
