Great educational opportunity is at the top of most people’s checklist when looking for a place to settle down with their families. In addition to offering an array of stellar public and private schools for children, Staten Island boasts two highly recommended colleges. These schools draw students not only from Staten Island but from out of state as well.

The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a four-year, senior college of The City University of New York. It has been serving Staten Island since 1976. CSI came into being through the merging of Staten Island Community College and Richmond College, making it the first public four year college in the borough. As a result, it is also proud to claim Gene Simmons as one of its most notable alumni.

In the midst of today’s extremely high cost world of education, CSI boasts a very reasonable $6,158 tuition for in-state residents and $15,728 for out-of-state residents. In U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 edition of Best Colleges, the College of Staten Island was ranked 135 on its list of Regional Universities, in the North. The school is set on a rolling 204 acre campus, which was completed in 1994. Its Victory Boulevard campus is centrally located and possesses the best of college campuses, over 300 classrooms, laboratories, woodlands, athletic fields, and art installations. Even if you are not looking to attend CSI, it is worth taking a trip there.

Wagner College is located in the Grymes Hill section of Staten Island, near the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge. It is a private school that is ranked 24th in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 edition of Best Colleges, Regional Universities in the North. The school was founded in the 1880s in Rochester, New York, and moved to Staten Island in 1918.

Wagner is set on an intimate 110 acre campus, which contains picturesque old buildings, including remnants of the Cunard and Vanderbilt estates, with modern residence halls and athletic facilities. The school boasts a 14:1 student to faculty ratio with close to 2,000 undergraduate students and 400 graduate students. If you are not in the market to attend college, you should still stop by Wagner to check out some of its NCAA Division I athletics.
