Staten Island has been home to churches for well over three centuries, with many of Staten Island’s historic churches still serving their original purpose centuries later. Landmark designation by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission will ensure they remain standing for generations to come. Presented below are some of Staten Island’s unique, historical, and architecturally interesting churches. They are well worth visiting both for their architectural designs and as places of worship.

Church of Saint Andrew
The Church of Saint Andrew occupies a two-acre site near Historic Richmond Town and LaTourette Park. The church was designed in a combination of the English Gothic and Norman Romanesque styles. An adjoining graveyard contains tombstones dating back to 1742 and impressive family burial vaults. The 1872 church incorporates remnants from an earlier eighteenth-century structure. Also, the grounds were the site of two skirmishes during the Revolutionary War.

Saint Paul’s Memorial Church and Rectory
Saint Paul’s was constructed in 1866 and designed by Edward T. Potter in the High Victorian Gothic style. The congregation was organized in 1833 as the second Episcopal parish on Staten Island. The church is very simple in its design. It was constructed of rough-hewn blocks of Staten Island trap rock and brownstone twin. The Stapleton church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

St. Patrick’s Church
St. Patrick’s Church was constructed in 1862 and borders Historic Richmond Town. It was granted landmark designation by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1968 as an early example of Romanesque Revival style and because it stands as a memorial to the missionaries of the church who established Catholicism on Staten Island. The church still operates as a parish church under the authority of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
