The Staten Island Greenbelt, a contiguous stretch of protected woodlands connecting several of Staten Island’s parks, provides a way for residents and visitors to escape the city life and get some real outdoors time. The second largest park in New York City, it consists of over 2,500 acres — more than three times the size of Central Park. The Greenbelt is home to trails, a nature center, recreational facilities, and a golf course. Here are a few features to check out on your next visit.
High Rock Park
This park is the area’s most popular “Forever Wild” park. High Rock Park contains five ponds, various wetlands, and hiking trails where visitors can see stands of red maples, highbush blueberries, and patches of skunk cabbage. Visitors can also see all types of birds, turtles, frogs, and muskrats.
Greenbelt Nature Center
The Nature Center is a great place to go to learn about Greenbelt history, geography, flora and fauna, and current happenings. The center has multiple public programs that include art workshops, author lectures, performances, and hikes throughout the year. Mini Camp, Peepers, and Tree Tots are programs for our youngest naturalists. There are programs for every age group, and environmental education classes are also offered.
La Tourette Public Golf Course
La Tourette is one of New York City’s best courses. The 6,708-yard, par 72 layout makes for a great day out with amazing views. La Tourette has separate ladies’ and men’s clubs, a practice facility, and offers group or individual instruction with PGA Professional Tim Stafford. They also offer private space for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate events, and other special parties. This course is not easily accessible without a car, but it’s well worth the trip.
