Most Staten Island Realtors Show Strong Interest in Global Transactions
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The results of recent global-related survey of Staten Island Board of REALTORS® (SIBOR) members highlighted a growing interest among Island Realtors in working internationally.
The real estate professionals were asked about their country of origin; languages spoken in addition to English; if they have worked with foreign or recent immigrant buyers and/or sellers; if they market themselves and/or properties globally; if they hold the designation of Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS), and if they are interested in learning more about global business opportunities.
The poll, conducted in August, revealed:
- 20 percent of SIBOR’s Realtor members work with foreign or recent immigrant buyers.
- 11 percent market themselves and/or properties globally.
- 8.6 percent have the CIPS designation.
- 28 percent are fluent in languages in addition to English.
- 100 percent said they are interested in learning more about global business opportunities.
Attracting foreign buyers and recent immigrants, however, may now be more difficult than in the past.
“Foreign buyers and recent immigrants have become less of a force in the U.S. housing market over the last couple of years,” NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said in August. “A lack of housing inventory – the primary factor hindering domestic buyers – is also holding back some foreign buyers. Additionally, less cross-border travel, falling international trade and fewer foreign students attending American universities are impacting foreign homebuyers.”
Yun also projected some optimism. “In the upcoming year, better opportunities may become available for foreign buyers in large U.S. cities like New York and San Francisco,” he said. “New patterns of domestic migration are trending away from expensive cities to more affordable suburbs and small communities because of the pandemic and greater work-from-home possibilities.”
