Continuing-education session spotlights steps to make aging homes more energy efficient

STATEN ISLAND. N.Y. –  The Staten Island Board of Realtors® (SIBOR) continues to embrace an initiative to educate its Realtor members about sustainability in real estate so they can better advocate its value to homebuyers and home sellers.

Following up on an earlier “Why Sustainability in Real Estate Matters” course for its members, SIBOR in August presented “Retrofitting Older Homes to Make Them More Sustainable,” a three-hour continuing education course designed to further expand its members acuity in matters of sustainability.

During the educational session, a variety of steps were discussed as a means to retrofit older houses, such as: Performing an energy audit; improving the building envelope; improving air sealing; installing heat pumps; replacing old windows; installing energy-efficient lighting and appliances; adding renewable energy systems, and emphasizing 100 percent electric energy usage.

The course explained that by retrofitting older houses, the carbon footprint could be significantly reduced, contributing to a cleaner, greener planet.

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) 2023 “Sustainability Report –  Residential” demonstrates a shift towards eco-conscious practices among real estate professionals and homeowners.

An increasing number of homebuyers are seeking eco-conscious properties. With increased knowledge about sustainability, Realtors can step up to meet the changing demands of consumers, working to connect buyers with environmentally responsible living spaces, and supporting homeowners seeking to embrace sustainability and make changes to homes to meet the changing needs of buyers.

The presentation was conducted by Realtor Christina Mathieson-Segura, an NAR GREEN instructor, certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate, and member of the Long Island Chapter of the U.S. Building Council.
