The Staten Island Board of Realtors (SIBOR) contributed $10,000 to the Island’s Hurricane Sandy relief effort
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Staten Island Rotary Foundation and Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS) presented $20,000 in gift cards to families affected by Hurricane Sandy.
A total of 400 gift cards, totaling $50 each, were given to children attending Egbert Intermediate School and PS 38, who were severely affected by Hurricane Sandy. Both schools are in Midland Beach, an area hard hit by the storm.
The gift cards were presented at Egbert Intermediate School. On hand to present the cards to Egbert Assistant Principal Mary Danke were Joseph Marchese, president of the Staten Island Rotary Club; John Tapinis, board president and Fern Zagor, executive director and CEO, both of SIMHS.
SIMHS has been providing crisis counseling services at both schools since they reopened. The agency had already been planning to provide $10,000 from the grant they received from the Robin Hood Foundation to help families identified by each school.
It was Egbert teacher Carol Mayora, a Dongan Hills resident, who reached out to the Rotary letting them know there were students who needed assistance. As a teacher, she was seeing daily how her students were being affected. READ MORE …
