Techbox, Staten Island’s newest tech incubator | Nicholas Rizzi via DNAinfo.com
In August, we wrote about how the historic Staten Island neighborhood of Stapleton may be poised to become New York’s newest tech scene. It may be a bit early to get out the champagne just yet, but there are signs that our optimism may have been warranted.
In an article on DNAinfo.com, Nicholas Rizzi reports that a former metal warehouse in the neighborhood will become Stapleton’s newest tech incubator. Real estate investor John Salis is creating the new facility, to be known as Techbox, as office space for local startups and entrepreneurs. Techbox is scheduled to open in December, and will feature private offices, conference and common rooms, and a receptionist area — all at Staten Island prices.
“There is a need for space and lots of tech guys,” Salis told DNAinfo. “I’m hoping to keep these good brains in Staten Island. They don’t have to take the ferry any more.”
This isn’t the first repurposing project Salis has taken on. Last year, he was behind the transformation of another warehouse into the Staten Island Arts Building, a space for artists so badly needed in the neighborhood that it was filled up within months.
