Staten Island Board of Realtors® initiatives supply cold-weather coats to local school kids in need and fulfill the holiday-time wishes of Island senior care facilities’ residents and recreation center participants

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Dec. 22, 2023) – The Staten Island Board of Realtors® (SIBOR) is bringing joy to children and seniors this holiday season by way of its “Keeping Kids Warm” and “Adopt-A-Senior” initiatives.

Combined, the programs have two main objectives: To supply much needed cold-weather coats to local school kids and fulfill the holiday-time wishes of residents, or recreation center participants, of Staten Island senior care facilities.

As of press time, 250 brand-new winter coats have been delivered to local children in need under SIBOR’S Keeping Kids Warm coat drive, an offshoot of the organization’s “Pack-to-School” program. Since launching 24 years ago, the Pack-to-School endeavor has annually provided hundreds of Island elementary school students with an assortment of brand new classroom supplies.

“The provision of a new coat offers more than warmth – it enables a child to attend school more comfortably during the colder winter months,” said SIBOR Director of Membership Linda F. Smith, coordinator of the Keeping Kids Warm project.

Running concurrently with the coat drive, SIBOR’s annual Adopt-A-Senior program is marking its 23rd anniversary this month as SIBOR volunteers, family members and friends hand deliver 800 personally requested gifts to residents of local senior care facilities and nonresidents who utilize a facility’s recreation center. The effort focuses upon those who are without family or friends to share the holidays.

Brand new children’s winter coats earmarked for delivery to Staten Island schools had been collected and stored at Staten Island Board of Realtors® headquarters prior to distribution.

Participating nursing homes include: The Esplanade at Staten Island; Silver Lake Specialized Care Center; Verrazano Nursing Home; Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center; ArchCare senior center; Eger Harbor House; Golden Gate Rehabilitation and Health Care Center; Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home; Staten Island Care Center; Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, and Mariners Residence.

“Our Adopt-A-Senior initiative continues to be a heart-warming and meaningful endeavor for all concerned,” said SIBOR Event Coordinator Annmarie Izzo. “Prior to this month, over 14,000 gifts have been provided through the program. Gift recipients at the senior centers have ranged in age from 41 to 108.”
