Kaitlin Monte To Crown Successor On Saturday

As Anti-Bullying Campaign Prepares For More Momentum

Kaitlin Monte, Miss New York 2011

NEW YORK — Miss New York 2011 Kaitlin Monte will crown her successor on Saturday [June 16] at the St. George Theater in Staten Island, N.Y.  Although her one-year reign will come to an end, her work to end bullying in New York state has only begun.

“The title opened many doors,” says Ms. Monte, a 23-year-old Rochester, N.Y., native and second runner-up to Miss America. “I was able to get my message out and become known for something more than a crown. My hope is the next woman finds similar success through this opportunity.”

Ms. Monte, a recent recipient of the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” Making a Difference Award, has worked with hundreds of schools and community organizations as a specialist and speaker on bullying. She has been featured on MSNBC and in conference keynotes across New York state.

With New York’s Dignity for All Students Act going into place this year, Ms. Monte’s speaking tour has already become part of the character of education at many schools in 2012.

Ms. Monte has partnered with State Sen. Jeff Klein in creating state laws protecting against cyber bullying. The two joined forces to create the New York Cyber Bully Census, a survey that allowed students to give input into Sen. Klein’s newly proposed bill.  The bill is currently under review in Albany, and Ms. Monte is expected to speak on its behalf this week, just days before ending her reign.
