Presentation to feature John P. Herrion, director of Disability Rights,  New York State Division of Human Rights

Staten Island. N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2023) – A class titled Fair Housing: Disabilities” will conclude a special three-part fair-housing course presented by the Richmond County Real Estate Institute, a division of the Staten Island Board of Realtors® (SIBOR). The presentation will offer insight into the regulatory and ethical conduct expected of real estate agents when working with consumers who have disabilities.

Required of all SIBOR members, the three-credit continuing education class will take place Wednesday, Oct. 25, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., via Zoom.

Dorothy Botsoe, vice chair of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Fair Housing Policy Committee, is the creator/facilitator of the three-part course. She will be joined for the presentation by guest speaker John P. Herrion, director of Disability Rights, New York State Division of Human Rights (DHR).

DHR enforces the New York State Human Rights Law. The agency protects New Yorkers against discrimination based on disability in employment, housing accommodations, nonreligious educational institutions, places of public accommodation, commercial spaces, and credit transactions.

FAIR HOUSING SIMULATION

As part of SIBOR’S ongoing commitment to fair housing, the latest continuing education classes were preceded by Staten Island’s real estate professionals having participated in Fairhaven, a fair housing simulation training-experience for Realtors provided by NAR. The platform uses the power of storytelling to help members identify, prevent, and address discriminatory practices in real estate.

Inspired by real stories, this innovative online experience has agents work against the clock to sell homes in the fictional town of Fairhaven, while confronting discrimination in the homebuying process.

During their Fairhaven interaction, SIBOR members also walked in the shoes of a homebuyer facing discrimination. The training provided customized feedback that the Island REALTORS® can apply to daily business interactions.
